 ELAN Launches the eKT81 Series Capacitive Touchpad Controller Chips

ELAN Microelectronics Corporation, Taiwan's foremost capacitive touchpad IC design house; launches the eKT81 Series capacitive touchpad controller chips. The eKT81 Series are primarily designed to perform virtual touch button and slider functions. The chips are highly integrated, quite stable, have low power consumption and low end-product development cost. Designing capacitive touchpad with eKT81Series is easy, simple, and economical as only a few peripheral components are required. Furthermore, eKT81 Series offers great product development flexibility while saving circuitry space as well as reducing production cost.

Elan further emphasizes that the eKT81 Series applications are vast and wide. As long as the device uses the conventional push button system, the eKT81 Series can be applied. These include but not limited to electronic toys, electronics dictionary, mobile phones, MP3, GPS, mouse, keyboard, portable media player (PMP), digital photo frames, and digital home appliances. To sum up, the chip's applications covers the whole "4C"  spectrum of electronic products, i.e.; Consumer, Computer, Communication, and Car electronics.

In its early stage, the capacitive touchpad sensing technology was developed and originally used in notebooks to perform mouse functions. Later, Apple Computer applied it into iPod which buoyed up its sales due to its streamline input interface. As of today, capacitive touchpad technology is fast becoming an ideal interface and multimedia control solutions for advanced users. Aside from its simple interface design, the capacitive touchpad is durable and can easily enhance the appealing look of the applied device. Hence, it is most suitable for fashionable and popular product design applications. When a finger tip approaches or touches the sensor panel, existing capacitance of the touch panel will increase. ELAN's eKT81 Series controller monitors and measures the amount of actual capacitive change and transforms the data into digital signal and transmits the information to the applied device. One single eKT81 Series controller can be designed to provide up to 31 virtual mechanical type button functions. 

With several years of R&D experience in capacitive touchpad technology, ELAN has successfully turned out various levels of capacitive touchpad controllers, from most elaborate ones, e.g., touchpad for notebooks; to simple ones, e.g., touchpad for button functions. The eKT81 Series offers a wide array of diversified communication interfaces, i.e., UART, SPI, I2C, and I/O mode. These are offered as options to minimize customer R&D overhead and allowing customer to spend more in optimizing the appealing look of their products to enhance product value and competitiveness. The eKT81 Series allows a maximum of 7.5mm thickness for touch sensor overlay without sacrificing sensor sensitiveness. This is quite enough to satisfy customer's design needs for variety of applications.

eKT8122AW: 
• Package Type: QFN32
• Operating Voltage: 2.6V~5.5V; Temp Range: -40℃ ~ 80℃. 
• Low power consumption (Sleep mode < 20uA).
• Supports up to 11 buttons. 
• Available in UART, SPI master, SPI slave, & I2C interfaces

eKT8122BM: 
• Package Type: SOP24
• Operating Voltage: 2.6V~5.5V; Temp Range: -40℃ ~ 80℃. 
• Low power consumption (Sleep mode < 20uA).
• Supports up to 6 buttons. 
• Available in UART, SPI master, SPI slave, & I2C interfaces

eKT8123AW: 
• Package Type: QFN32
• Operating Voltage: 2.6V~5.5V; Temp Range: -40℃ ~ 80℃. 
• Low power consumption (Sleep mode < 20uA).
• Supports up to 9 buttons. 
• Available in standard I/O interface.

eKT8150BW: 
• Package Type: QFN40
• Operating Voltage: 2.6V~5.5V; Temp Range: -40℃ ~ 80℃. 
• Low power consumption (Sleep mode < 20uA).
• Supports up to 6 buttons. 
• Available in UART, SPI master, SPI slave, & I2C interfaces
